Mama's Turmeric Milk

I’m quite proud of this photo - although it’s not the recipe version. This one’s from Dineen.

I’m quite proud of this photo - although it’s not the recipe version. This one’s from a local cafe, Dineen.

As promised, here’s the version that I adapted from my mother. As previously mentioned, turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties so if ever you’re feeling something soothing, this will do the trick. For women, it’s a great beverage to consume during months where you’re riddled with cramps. For everyone else, if you just love the taste and want a healthier alternative to hot chocolate, here’s one worth having!

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp butter (or you can use coconut oil for a vegan version)

  • 2 tsp turmeric

  • 1 tsp ground cardamom

  • pinch saffron

  • 1 cup milk of choice (I use coconut milk)

Alternate Version (for a lovely BIG mug) and if you don’t have the most expensive spice in the world on hand.

  • 2 cups milk

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1 tsp turmeric

  • 1/8 tsp ground cardamom

Method:

  1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the fat (butter or coconut oil) and as soon as it’s melted, add the turmeric and mix well with the fat

  2. Add the remaining ingredients and mix on medium-low heat until evenly mixed

  3. Pour in a cup or in an airtight container. Keeps well refrigerated for a day (best it’s consumed within a day)
